Assignment 2

Assignment 2

The last assignment we are required to form a group and chose any type of building (house, apartment, etc), after decided which building to chose we have to visit that place. The building that had chosen is a bungalow house at Bukit Jelutong, Shah Alam Selangor. Moreover, we had to observe the design and structure of the building. Each of us had to chose which topic we had to do. There is four topic that had stated in the assignment brief which is foundation, openings, and structure. For this task I decided to do about the structure.

Structure:

Based on the bungalow that we had visited, the house is a double story which it had a balcony. Since I am doing the topic of structure and I pick the balcony structure.

Balcony

Refer to this picture, the balcony is supported by two column and also the beam that was implanted inside the concrete on platform of the balcony. The reason of putting the beam in it because the bottom of beam was act as 'tension' and the upper will act as the 'compression' which the beam can easily withstand the weight of the person on the balcony and also the structure of the balcony. Nevertheless, the beam can be placed outside of the concrete but it have to planted inside the concrete because to prevent the beam get rust and when the beam become rusted the function of it will become poor and worse case is that the beam will crack. From my understanding, the beam not just placed on top of the beam only, the beam had to put little bit inside of the wall house so that the beam will not break or crack easily and also to make sure the balcony are sturdy.
Example:  Some part of the beam will place inside of the wall.

Other than the beam, the column under the balcony are not just for aesthetic wise but it is also work as to support the balcony. The weight of the balcony structure will transfer to the column and move to the foundation which it will make the balcony can stand firmly

My explanation on A3 paper.
